Spring Break Homework: Question #1

Reread the part in scene four where Romeo & Juliet meet for the first time. Romeo's actions and his speech are very convincing--Juliet is hooked from the start. Using text to support your claim, in what ways is Romeo's language better than a pick up line? What is it about what he says that has Juliet from the first touch of the hand? Do you think you would ever fall for someone using the same attempt on you?

  1. What Romeo does is much more effective than a pickup line. Since he grabs her hand, she has no way of ignoring him. Then, instead of hitting on her, he apologizes profusely, saying how he has tainted her sacred hand. In reality, I think that it wouldn't work on most people. I someone grabbed my hand and started apologizing, I would be kind of creeped out.

  2. Romeo's actions are very smooth, they're more effective than just some pickup line. When he grabs her hand & kisses it, he then apologizes, only because her hand is sacred. I don't believe in today's time this would actually work. If someone (that I knew) did this to me, I wouldn't mind, but since Romeo is a stranger to Juliet, I would definitely feel like this person's a creeper.

  3. Romeo does a good job at talking to Juliet at the party because grabs her hand and immediately has to say something to her after. By doing this Romeo and Juliet start a conversation to get to know each other a little bit. I don't think this would work in real life because people who don't know you won't come up and grab your hand to start talking.

  4. romeo does do a good job to talking to Juliet because right away he gets her attention by grabing her hand and apologizing. Then he acts like a gentleman and kisses her hand and compliments her. This might work depending on on the situation, if its a person the girl knows then maybe it will work, if it is some random guy then it probably wont, it would also need to be updated for it to work also. like instead of grabing her hand maybe him bumping into her or something.

  5. Romeo's actions were wrong since it was not normal to just reach out and grab someone. But, he knew that it was wrong so he apologized much quicker and kissed her hand. When he said she was a shrine, describing how she was I bet she was drawn to what he said. But if that ever happened to me, I would look at the guy as if he's crazy. I mean, why would I want a guy that is a total stranger grab hold of my hand.. What if he was a kidnapper? You never know... Haha

  6. Usually people use pick-up lines to start to talk to someone else and get to know them more, and eventually hook up with them. What Romeo did must have really been effective because after like one minute of talking, they already start to kiss. The way he approaches Juliet and how he talks to her, apologizing for touching her, and then starts complimenting her was probably what stole her heart, besides Romeo's looks. That would have been a great way to spit game back then, but nowaday's he would have probably got slapped for grabbing her like that.

  7. Romeo was thinking very smartly in this situation. He knew that touching people you didnt know was rude so if he grabbed her hand he knew she would turn around and have something to say. He instantly apoligized though because he knew he was wrong. That led him to having to say his name and kiss her name which then helped him lead hisself into a conversation. I think it depends on who the person is whether or not it would work nowadays because some people would take it offensive and others wouldn't really care they would take it as an accident.

  8. Romeo is slick and Juliet can't resist him grabbing her by her hand. The scene is more romantic by him grabbing her hand than trying to talk to her any other way. He apologizes right after for her not to overreact. I don't think nowadays it works because now people use pick-up lines. "If you were a booger, Id pick you first".

  9. I wonder if i get any ponts for sending this a day late. Anyways, Romeo is a sly dog. I think he purposely grabbed her hand and apologized. So then he could say that she was like a shrine and flatter her. He wanted Juliet to like him right from the start. I personaly do not know if i would fall in love at first sight, it depends on what she's saying or what she looks like(i wanna make sure she's a SHE).

  10. As like mitchell, i wonder if i get points but anyways... to get Juliets attention so she would notice Romeo, he physically grabs her hand and then realizes to be polite, he needs to apologize. I'm not to sure if i would fall for him in that way because to get some ones attention, Romeo had to physically get her attention so he must not be that interesting.

  11. I think what Romeo did was very smart and clever. Because he just didn't get her attention but he got her to feel him. He was very smart in the way that he didnt use words, he went straight up to grab her hand. So then he could apologize and start talking to her.

  12. Grabbing Juliets hand isnt a mistake, you don't accidently just grab a random persons hand that you like. If he wanted her attention he should have just said hi. It was very polite that he apologized, but you still shouldn't just grab someones hand, "by mistake."

  13. Romeo to me doesnt really use a pickup line. In a sense by grabbing her hand he is letting her know that he has a strong attraction to her. Romeo must be very fond of Juliet already because I do not think it is normal for someone to do this to someone you just met.

  14. What Romeo tells Juliet after grabbing her hand is sweet because he starts to apologize to her. That's how they met and stayed the whole night together. Although, I don't think it would of worked in real life because he would of gotten screamed at or slapped. To me if guy that I don't know grabs my hand and starts o say things to me, it would of been weird and creepy.

  15. It's not just some pick up line that Romeo says to Juliet, it's more than that. He compared her to an angel, stars, the sun, and the moon. He makes her blush and girls love it when they blush in front of the most gorgeous man. Yes, I think i would fall for a guy like Romeo because of his smooth talking and beautiful voice. Especially when he's super hot than yes most definitely i would fall for him.

  16. No, I would not fall for that because it is cheesy. Romeo should do something else to win Juliet like taking her out. Also, he could have brought her flowers. One problem is that they are rushing into love when they barely even met. The biggest problem they face is that he is a Montague and she is a Capulet. This is a huge challenge since the families are beefing.

  17. Well he had it all planned out from the beginning. He was going to grab her hand because back then it was rude to touch somebody you didnt know. then he would have a reason to talk to her. it's better than a pickup line because it was all really well thought out and he's clever. he talks smoothley.
